Do you need a car in Tenerife?
Yes. Tenerife is one of the destinations in Europe where a rental car pays off the most: rentals are very cheap, there are no tolls anywhere on the island, and the parts everyone comes for — Mount Teide, the Anaga rural park, the village of Masca, the quiet beaches of the north — are poorly served by public transport. The TF-21 climbs into Teide National Park above 2,000 metres, a winding mountain road that can carry snow or ice in winter — fuel up before the ascent. The gorge road into the village of Masca is narrow and demanding, and is not a route for nervous drivers.
Local tax and driving rules
The Canary Islands charge IGIC (7%) instead of mainland Spain's VAT. Driving is on the right, and the common minimum rental age is 21. An Israeli or EU licence is valid; an International Driving Permit is recommended for anyone without a licence in English.
