Things to know before renting in Venice
- Cars cannot enter Venice island — the city is car-free. Rent a car to explore the Veneto mainland and day-trip into Venice by vaporetto (water bus).
- The Dolomites are 2–3 hours north by car — one of Europe's most spectacular mountain drives, particularly the Passo Pordoi and Passo Falzarego.
- Italy drives on the right; most rentals are manual. Request automatic well in advance for mountain driving.
- Parking at Tronchetto (Venice's main car park island) costs €25–40/day. Fusina is cheaper. Both have regular vaporetto connections into central Venice.
- Minimum age is 21; young-driver surcharge under 25. Italy requires an IDP for visitors from outside the EU if the licence is not in a Latin script.
- The Prosecco Hills DOC (Valdobbiadene, 1h from Venice) and Euganean Hills are excellent wine-region drives on quiet country roads.
